The Russian Experience

by Tui McCaughey

(The Crawlspace geocities website is currently out of action, so you can access the article directly from the above link. )

Tsars and Russian royalty, that’s what I thought of when I imagined St Petersburg. Opulence, power, grace, beauty. But at the same time I was confused. St Petersburg is in Russia. And when I envisaged Russia the images that came to mind were of freezing cold, bleak, grey landscapes, and extreme poverty. A rich cultural and historic past, but an impoverished and desolate future. I found it very hard to reconcile these two very different thoughts. So to say I was looking forward to visiting St Petersburg was a gross understatement...

Quite an eye-opener. The opulance contrasted with the poverty. The market place. The meat place. Mickey D's. I love the tale of the passport control, I just have visions of someone desperately needing the loo and having to jump up and down from foot to foot waiting for someone to let them through. Funny as hell.

Thanks for this Kiwi, you are our roving travel reporter. I can only dream of ever getting to the same places you have been Smiley Thanks for giving us a glimpse.

Aw, kiwi. Your guided tours to the many places you've been make me feel like I've been there too.

Your descriptions are clear and fascinating - not to mention laugh out loud funny (yes, it was worth going beyond the usual abbreviation Smiley).

In addition, I love the little things you notice along the way that really emphasize the cultural differences, like the stranger joining your table at McDonalds.

Thanks for making me feel like a world traveler! Smiley

You take us along for the ride of a lifetime with such imagery..not just of what you saw but how it made you feel.

You make it all sound like a tour with you as the tour guide as you lead us through your experiences which such crystal clear visuals that we cannot but feel like we are actually sharing the experience.

I love this Tui... you give us a warts and all experience often lacking in the highly romanticised travel diaries that are elsewhere. It makes the whole thing sound so much more real!!

I love to read your story's, It's just like being there yourself. Some things reminded me of our vacation In the Czech republic.

I hope you will travel lots more to give us lots more stories! (Which will be soon, another 4 weeks right?)

Wow... I've never liked the place that much cause our history is what it is... blah blah blah, Smiley that's not the point but that was really interesting!! Smiley

As Atra said, you have ability to make us feel that we are actually there watchin the whole scene and that was one of those reasons that made me like it. Others would be that it was funny and really well written so it kept me hooked almost all the way. Almost, cause i was so tired when i read this yesterday that I hardly could keep my eyes open... Smiley

Anyway, that was great and when you get back from where ever you now are, please write them more! Smiley
